Interesting facts about Dr. Blythe:

  • He graduated from MIT with a degree in Biology in 1974.
  • He studied Nutrition at Penn State for two years and did clinical nutrition research for a year before attending medical school.
  • Prior to entering medical school at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in Maine, Dr. Blythe spent several months studying Spanish in the little town of  Huehuetenango, Guatemala.
  • Dr. Blythe has returned to Guatemala to work a number of times, at one time spending two months in the jungles of Southern Mexico working with Guatemalan refugees who had fled their violent civil war. "One time I was stopped crossing the border entering Mexico with several duffle bags full of medicines - I thought I was going to be the first person ever arrested for smuggling drugs into Mexico!"
  • Dr. Blythe has made several trips to the rainforests to study plant medicines with Dr. James Duke, and has visited the rainforests of Borneo, the Amazon, and Central America. He created and maintains an award-winning web site at RainforestEducation.com.
  • Dr. Blythe's first medical practice was in Lubec, Maine, at the far eastern tip of the Unites States. He was thirty miles from a thirty bed hospital, and underwent a "trial-by-fire", becoming a typical country doctor - delivering babies, making house calls, and getting paid in lobster. Since several thousand Canadians living on adjacent Campobello Island had no physician, Dr. Blythe became a provider for the Canadian Medicare system, which covers all Canadians through their income tax. He later joined the faculty of the Family Medicine Residency Program at Presbyterian St/Luke's Medical Center in Denver, and has practiced in Melbourne, Florida for the past eleven years.
  • Dr. Blythe, a member of Physicians for a National Health Program, was the Democratic candidate for congress in Florida's 15th District in 2008. Although he was unsuccessful with 43% of the vote, he received more votes than any Democrat has ever received in this conservative district - demonstrating that his message that no American should be denied needed health care is one that resonates strongly.
